Why tape fails on PP, PE and powder coatings

Adhesion needs wetting: the adhesive must have lower surface energy than the substrate, or it beads up.

  • LSE materials: PP, PE/HDPE, TPO, EPDM, PTFE, silicone, acetal, most powder coatings.

  • Powder coating is a process, not a material — similar parts can behave differently. Qualify the real part.

  • Failure signature: holds for weeks, then releases completely — incomplete wetting, not a bad roll.

  • Structural: LSE-rated foam VHB LSE-060WF/110WF/160WF. Thin or electronics: 300LSE on PET (9495LE/93005LE/93010LE/93015LE).

  • Light mounting, instant grab: tesa 4970 tackified PVC, 225 µm, ~13–14 N/cm on steel, −40 to 60 °C.

  • Remove mould release first, IPA wipe with full flash-off, light abrasion, no finger contact; primer or plasma only if needed.

  • Validate with 90° peel and static shear on production parts, repeated after thermal cycling and humidity.
